Whitehorse guide for tourists

The Yukon's only real city, 28,000 people, and the base for 90% of trips — here is how to actually spend 2 or 3 days.

The lay of the land

Whitehorse is compressed and walkable — the whole downtown fits in a 15-minute stroll along Main Street and 2nd Avenue, ending at the Yukon River. Everything of interest sits between the Millennium Trail (riverside) and 4th Avenue. The airport is 10 minutes from downtown; a taxi runs $20, a rental car is smarter for anyone going beyond city limits. Riverdale (across the bridge) is the residential side with the hospital and the trailhead for Grey Mountain. Porter Creek is the north end suburb and matters mostly if you are staying at an Airbnb.

Day 1 and Day 2

Day 1: Walk the Millennium Trail loop (5 km, free), SS Klondike sternwheeler ($10), lunch at Burnt Toast, MacBride Museum ($15), dinner at Klondike Rib & Salmon. Day 2: Drive to Miles Canyon (10 minutes), hike the basalt gorge, kayak or SUP with Kanoe People ($60), coffee at Baked Cafe, dinner at Wayfarer Oyster House. If you have Day 3, drive to Carcross (1 hour) or hike Fish Lake Ridge. Everything above operates year-round except the sternwheeler.

Where to stay and what to skip

Best base: Coast High Country Inn or Edgewater Hotel for walkability ($160–200). Nicer and quieter: Inn on the Lake, 40 minutes south on Marsh Lake, $250 and the aurora viewing is unbeatable. Skip: the Airport Chalet-style motels unless you land at midnight. Skip: driving to the Yukon Wildlife Preserve unless you have kids or a rental morning to kill — the animals are real but the fences take the edge off. Do not skip: Alchemy Cafe for at least one meal.
